She has been an associate and assistant director at the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, LA Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Gran Teatr del Liceu, and the Bolshoi, working with Francesca Zambello, John Caird, Stephen Lawless, Lee Blakeley, and Sir David McVicar.Prague is famous for its strong beers, but it should be better known as a centre of excellence for opera, ballet and concerts.

While creating funky opera experiences in New York with Pocket Opera and spending eleven summer seasons at the Santa Fe Opera (working her way up from technical apprentice to stage director), Shawna was also a Professor of Theatre at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, teaching courses on acting, design, stage management and directing. At the Schukin Institute, which offers a unique system of training for actors, Shawna studied biomechanics, Stanislavski’s theories of physical action, fencing, rhythmics, directing, and dance.Īfter touring and performing with the Bread and Puppet Theater, Shawna pursued a career directing opera. She studied with Andrei Droznin, Sergei Zemtsov, and Igor Zolotovitski, covering the history of Russian theatre training, including the techniques of Vsevolod Meyerhold, Evgeny Vakhtangov, Konstantin Stanislavski, and Michael Chekhov. Her first project in Moscow, directing and designing a puppet version of Primo Levi’s If This is a Man, performed at the Moscow Art Theater and toured within Russia.ĭuring her five years in Russia, Shawna pursued work with theater institutions while completing her MFA in Directing & Movement from the Boris Schukin Theatre Institute of the Vakhtangov Theater. After completing her undergraduate degrees in Theater (BA) & Italian (BA) at UT Austin, she moved to Russia in order to pursue her masters. Her work has been seen at Santa Fe Opera, San Francisco Opera, Bread & Puppet Theater, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Dallas Opera, Skylight Music Theater, the Bolshoi Theater, and Schauspiel Hannover. Shawna is known for her feminist staging’s of classic and modern pieces, bringing passionate new resonance to the warhorses of opera and grappling with contemporary works through a feminist paradigm.
